Stability of massive objects in a new scalar-tensor theory

    Get PDF
We define a new scalar-tensor theory with an effective gravitational coupling constant depending on a scalar field. The coupling is such that the gravitational interaction decreases with the strength of the scalar field. We show that this is not sufficient to prevent the gravitational collapse of sufficiently massive dense objects

The Law on Liability for Reduced Property Values Caused by Planning Decisions in the Federal Republic of Germany

    Get PDF
There are two major questions in German law concerning injuries caused by planning decisions. First, what rights does a landowner have when private property, zoned by a binding land-use plan for a private-type land use, is subsequently designated for public purposes? Second, what rights does a landowner have when a planning authority revises a permitted private-type land-use category to a less valuable category? This Article first looks at these two main questions. It then proceeds to analyze the law regarding other types of planning decisions that may also have negative effects on property values, such as temporary moratoria

    Memoryless distributions revisited

The present paper discusses the memoryless property of distributions on the real line. The main result asserts that every distribution Q which is memoryless on a set containing 0 must be concentrated on {0} or (0,∞). It is then shown that this condition is necessary and sufficient for Q to be either the Dirac distribution in 0 or an exponential distribution. Corresponding results for the geometric distribution are given as well

High-throughput spectroscopic viscosity measurement of nanocomposite sols with ETC-effect

    Get PDF
A high-throughput method for viscosity measurement was developed and tested for nanocomposite sols with an easy-to-clean (ETC) effect. The method is based on doping of sols with viscosity sensitive fluorescent dye 4,4′-bis-(2- benzoxazolyl)-stilbene (BOS) and acquisition of fluorescence intensity data. The spectroscopic data were correlated with viscosity data derived from mechanical measurements with a rotational viscometer and show an exponential correlation of both mechanical and spectroscopic measurement methods in the relevant data space of 3-5 mPa•s. For application of the spectroscopic viscosity measurement as a high-throughput assay doping of sols with BOS slurry was carried out with an automated liquid handling system, and spectroscopic measurements were performed with a fluorescence microplate reader
